Dr. Isaac R. Navarro, DMD, MPH, grew up in Visalia and returned after dental school to practice in his hometown. In January 2023, he became the third owner of the family practice now known as Navarro Dentistry, Inc.. The office has served local families for more than 35 years and is also home to the Special Smiles Center for people with special needs.

In the interview below, Dr. Navarro explains why he came back to Visalia, how the Special Smiles Center grew out of a local need, and why patients who have delayed care should not feel embarrassed.

“Many of my patients are people I grew up with, and some have known me throughout my own journey in becoming a dentist and building my practice.”
Dr. Isaac Navarro

How did you get into dentistry?

I have been practicing dentistry for 18 years. My interest in dentistry began with my love of biology and the health sciences. I was drawn to a profession that would allow me to combine my passion for healthcare with creativity and hands-on work.

Dentistry gives me the opportunity to make a meaningful difference in patients' lives while using both science and creativity every day.

Where did you train?

My educational background began with a degree in Human Anatomy and Physiology, which gave me a strong foundation in the health sciences. I went on to earn my dental degree from A.T. Still University's Arizona School of Dentistry & Oral Health. I also completed additional training in community and public health through the University of North Carolina.

Throughout my career, I have continued my education in oral surgery and special needs dentistry so I can care for patients with different needs.

Why did you come back to Visalia to practice?

This community has always been home to me. I grew up here, and after leaving for my education and dental training, I knew I wanted to return and build my career where I grew up. Coming back has allowed me to serve the community that shaped me.

Many of my patients are people I grew up with, and some have known me throughout my own journey in becoming a dentist and building my practice. It is rewarding to care for them and their families. Serving the community that has been such an important part of my life makes what I do especially meaningful.

How did you come to own Navarro Dentistry?

The practice has served local families for more than 35 years. I became the third owner when I acquired the practice in January 2023. Since then, I have been building on that history while bringing my own approach to patient care.

Who are your patients?

We see patients of all ages, from young children to seniors, and we enjoy caring for entire families. We often see several generations of the same family. Our youngest patient is just 1 year old, while our oldest is 101.

It is rewarding to build lifelong relationships with patients and care for their families through the years.

What should patients feel when they walk in?

We want our practice to feel warm and welcoming, like a family-run office. From the moment people walk through our doors, we want them to feel comfortable, listened to, and cared for as part of our dental family.

I think what sets our practice apart is the way we combine modern dental technology and techniques with the personal, family-centered approach of traditional dentistry. We bring in new tools when they improve care while keeping the relationships that are at the heart of family dentistry.

What kind of dentistry do you enjoy most?

I especially enjoy preventive care because the goal is to help patients maintain their oral health and avoid more complex dental problems. I also enjoy implant dentistry and using technology such as 3D imaging and CAD/CAM to plan and provide treatment.

Special needs dentistry is especially meaningful to me. I enjoy working with patients who may need extra time, patience, and individualized care to feel comfortable at the dentist.

What is the Special Smiles Center?

I would like more people in our community to know about our Special Smiles Center, which provides dental care for people with special needs. We saw a need for a dental home where patients and their families could feel welcomed, understood, and supported.

We want the center to be a resource for local families and a comfortable place where each patient can get the care they need.

What dental technology do you use?

We use 3D printing, digital technology, and digitally assisted surgical techniques. We can also make same-day crowns in the office, so patients can receive a restoration in one visit.

What concerns do you hear from new patients?

Some new patients worry that dentistry has become more focused on sales and the cost of treatment than on their health. We understand why people may feel that way, and we take the concern seriously.

Our practice is built around doing what is right for the patient. We explain the options, listen to concerns, and recommend treatment based on individual needs, not on sales or production goals.

What would you tell someone who has put off the dentist?

My advice is simple: don't wait any longer. Getting started is the first step. Regular dental visits can help identify small concerns before they become bigger, more complicated problems.

If it has been a while since your last visit, there is no need to feel embarrassed or overwhelmed. We're here to meet you where you are, listen to your concerns, and help you move forward with a plan that works for you. Taking that first step is often the hardest part, but it can make a lasting difference in your health.

What do you do outside the office?

Outside of dentistry, I'm a husband and proud father of four boys, so family is a very important part of my life. I'm also a big Fresno State football and NFL fan.

My faith is another important part of who I am. I serve as a Christian minister through Prison Fellowship, where I support people who are incarcerated. Family, faith, service, and community are at the heart of who I am, and those values carry over into how I care for my patients.
